Gavin Smith's ride for Smiddy

Hello Balmoral, we’re on again.

Preparations are well underway for the fifth annual “Bottlemart Smiling for Smiddy Challenge” from the 4th to the 11th of September, 2010.

In the past three years Hitachi Construction Machinery (Australia) Pty Ltd (Hitachi) has chosen to raise money for Cancer Research through the Smiling For Smiddy Challenge, through the generous support of our customers, staff, suppliers, families and friends. During this time Hitachi has raised an incredible $252,150.00.

So how have the funds been used?

The funds that we have collectively raised have gone towards some very exciting developments, one being the clinical trial around the immunotherapy to fight Prostate Cancer. Cancer is particularly hard for the immune system to defeat, as it is made up of the body’s own tissue, which the immune system does not recognise as dangerous.  Immunotherapy teaches the immune system to recognise these dangerous cells and destroy them.  This is an exciting development as cancer cells are very clever at disguising themselves so they remain hidden from the body’s natural defences.

This year….60 riders, again including myself, are seeking to raise collectively $750,000.00 for world-class cancer research at the Mater Hospital.

This year Hitachi will be represented with four riders for the 1600km journey, Brendan Camilleri, Gavin Smith, Alistair Christie and Joel Sansom. We have taken the challenge to ride the 1600kms in 8 days from Brisbane to Townsville in memory of Adam Smiddy and family and friends who have also been adversely effected or have lost their battle to this devastating disease.

The money we raise with your help will be split between the Mater Hospital - Melanoma and Prostate Cancer Research.

Our “Hitachi Team” target - $125,000.

Please take a moment to visit www.smiddy.org.au to catch up on the latest information including our rider profiles (you can read all the reasons why we are undertaking this gruelling Challenge), recent news and the ever-increasing fund raising target.

Please click on the following link to donate now http://www.everydayhero.com.au/hitachiteam or fill in the details below and send your cheque to myself and I will forward to the Mater foundation, your support is much appreciated.

Regards Gavin Smith – Racing Secretary Balmoral Cycling Club
